LANGSTON SPED THE LAST FEW miles to the ranch, his blood pressure approaching the boiling stage as his speedometer approached lethal limits. He’d just gotten off the phone with a hysterical Gina, who’d read him an idiotic note that she’d found on the dresser in the guestroom where Trish had been sleeping.

Principles. Where the hell were Trish’s principles sixteen years ago when she’d made love to him like she couldn’t get enough? At least this time she’d left a note. For that he should probably send flowers.

He was almost to the gate when he heard the siren. He slowed and pulled over. Another speeding ticket. He’d definitely send flowers. And then Trish could damn well walk out of his life again with his blessings since she was hell-bent on doing it anyway.

But it was an ambulance that came up behind him and then sped past and turned in at Jack’s Bluff. Trish. Her name went off like an explosion in his head. Panic all but shut down his brain as he followed the ambulance.

He saw Trish first, standing near Bart’s truck. Unhurt. His heart jumped to his throat. And then he saw Jim Bob being lifted to the stretcher, his boots sticking out from under the sheet. Jim Bob saw Langston and waved.

Langston waved back, but something hard settled in his chest. He wouldn’t be sending flowers, at least not to Trish. But he would be setting a few things straight.
